In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil or melted butter.
Lightly flour a clean work surface. Transfer the dough onto the floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Grease a large bowl with olive oil and place the kneaded dough in the bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
Once the dough has doubled in size, gently punch it down to release the air. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and shape it into a loaf or desired shape.
Place the shaped dough onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet or into a greased loaf pan.
Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Once the dough has risen for the second time, remove the covering. Optionally, slash the top of the loaf with a sharp knife or razor blade to allow for expansion.
